Kenya's former first lady dies in London hospital

Kenya’s former first lady Lucy Kibaki has passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital in London.

Lucy, who was 75 years, had been admitted at the Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London a few days earlier.

It is with deep sense of sadness and loss that I have learnt of the untimely death of the Former First Lady Her Excellency Mrs. Lucy Kibaki.

The first lady had previously been admitted at a hospital in the capital Nairobi for nearly a month.

President Uhuru Kenyatta broke the news on social media. “Her Excellency has been unwell for the last one month and has been receiving treatment here in Kenya and subsequently in the United Kingdom,” he said.

Kenyatta noted that Lucy will be remembered for her immense contribution in the development of our country.

“Especially notable was Her Excellency’s virtues of leadership and commitment to improving the wellbeing of the ordinary Kenyans, in particular her focus on tackling HIV/AIDs, which will remain an inspiration to many,” Kenyatta added.

Lucy had not been seen in public for several years, though she attended the promulgation of the country’s new constitution in 2010.

The 75-year-old was known for being vocal and often expressed her dissatisfaction both on private and public issues.

She left behind four children.
